FANCAM is coming back for a second Currie Cup season after it proved a big hit with fans last year, when the innovative technology was used during the tournament for the first time.
Currie Cup partner, DirectAxis financial services, was delighted with the brand engagement as fans registered to view a 360-degree image of DHL Western Province and Xerox Lions Currie Cup matches and tagged themselves.
Described as the ‘ultimate crowd selfie’, the FANCAM technology was developed in South Africa and over the past eight years has featured at major events around the world.
From Taylor Swift and U2 concerts to the Super Bowl, UEFA Champions League final and Daytona 500, fans have been able to visit a dedicated website, zoom in, find themselves on an interactive 360o image and share it with friends and family on their social media accounts. There’s even a permanent FANCAM at Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Rangers and Knicks.
DirectAxis Financial Services has brought it back home again, so fans can enjoy the FANCAM experience at 10 Currie Cup matches this season. These include two DHL Western Province games, two Xerox Lions games, two Vodacom Blue Bulls games a Cell C Sharks match, the semi-finals and the final.
Currie Cup supporters can register on www.directaxis.fancam.com before the games to be notified when the image goes live.
As well as seeing themselves at the games, fans who visit the website can stand a chance to win a VIP trip to the Currie Cup final and other fantastic prizes. Simply look for the virtual Currie Cup which has been hidden in the stadia to stand a chance to win.
Marlies Kappers, head of marketing, explains: “This is the third year of our Currie Cup partnership and we wanted to do something more than just branding at matches. The FANCAM proved so popular last year we decided to bring it back to let people re-live the excitement of being at the game as well as share their experience with their friends and family.”
FANCAM CEO, Tinus le Roux, says: “We’ve taken FANCAM to some of the biggest sporting events in the world, but it’s very special to be back at the world’s longest-running rugby tournament.”
